Ski technique changes over time to become more efficient more powerful more competitive. Same for equipment. Skiathlon aka Combi boots were considered very specialized for Skiathlon competitions or for lower cost and performance entry level gear. But as cross country classic racecourses have become more demanding many of the world elite are donning Skiathlon boots for a pure classic race. Gone is the clunky and movement inhibiting cuff designs now a skier can have superior downhill control without sacrificing striding fluidity.
